AN UPDATE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

Dear Members,

The day we can reopen Parra Leagues and Vikings, and the Eels can start playing football again, is drawing pleasingly closer – though not quite here yet!

The Australian community continues to make good progress in the fight against COVID-19 and the NSW Government has announced a slight easing of restrictions from today. Now cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs can reopen dining facilities for up to 10 people in this first stage of reopening the economy.

Everyone can appreciate that unfortunately it is not feasible to open a big club like ours for just 10 patrons. We will need to wait for further easing of restrictions.

We are proud however to continue with the successful new initiatives introduced recently including Home Delivery and Takeaway, the sale and delivery of Jacks Pale Ale, and our online raffles.

In addition, Parra Leagues has been contacting the elderly and most vulnerable amongst its Members to undertake welfare checks and has been providing care packages to people in need of assistance.

We thank our more than 200 staff who continue to maintain a positive commitment to our organisation during this difficult period. Virtually all of our staff have either been stood down or been placed on restricted hours due to the closure of our venues. This has had a major impact on our valued team members, and we are pleased to have been able to assist over half our workforce who have qualified for the Federal Government’s JobKeeper scheme.

JobKeeper has helped us to keep our team together and working hard for Members during this shutdown period, to bring these new services to you. Whilst the work has been complicated by the uncertainty of the length of the shutdown period and the potential restrictions, these services have been a major positive for Members and for Staff, who have been able to contribute to the Club and to serve our Members, even while our venues remained closed.

There have been several press reports about the parlous state of finances of many clubs. We are pleased to confirm that Parra Leagues remains strong within the context of the current environment. We have established prudent additional banking facilities to ensure that we can adequately support the key areas of our business, including the Eels, and importantly, to fund the initiatives that will enable us to thrive once we can reopen.

The Club is also closely monitoring the impact on our community of virtually inevitable reductions in the ClubGRANTS scheme. Parra Leagues and Vikings are amongst the largest financial contributors to community organisations in our area. We will endeavour to minimise the impact on our community partners.

A key objective of your Board is a long-term strategic plan for the Club that will guide the next phase of its history.

We want your feedback to help us meet our Members’ needs. So, we will be conducting a Member survey in coming weeks. We encourage you to participate to ensure that your voice is heard, and your feedback is incorporated. This will all cost money, but will be funded from the savings created by Directors forgoing fees.

Finally, we encourage all our Members to download the Government’s COVIDSafe app to help keep our community safe and enabling our Club to open sooner.

In the meantime, all Members are encouraged to contact the Club to enquire about our new services and what your Club can do to help anyone in need of support.
